Be Safe and Avoid a Fourth of July DUI Arrest

Thumbnail image for images.jpgAs many of you already know, this Friday marks the 238th anniversary of the independence of the United States of America. A true American holiday, the 4th of July is often a day filled with partying and patriotism. Hot dogs, burgers, and of course alcohol will be flowing (perhaps even more so with the holiday falling on a Friday this year). Some will spend the entire week planning out their 4th of July festivities; but many will fail to plan for arguably the most crucial part of this holiday, getting home. We want you to be safe this holiday weekend and avoid any chance of a DUI arrest.

Last year, officers representing Orange County's 38 law enforcement agencies arrested at least 247 people for driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs during the week of July 4th (OC Weekly). Although driving under the influence is a misdemeanor, this charge can result in serious consequences such as jail time, a driver's license suspension, and/or bodily injury. If this is your third or fourth felony you could even be charged with a felony.

The Florida Highway Patrol, along with many other local police departments, will be setting up DUI checkpoints throughout the Central Florida area during this holiday weekend. Expect checkpoints in areas where there is typically large influxes of traffic. Winter Park, UCF, Downtown and East Orlando, Longwood, Sanford, Disney, and Altamonte Springs are common targets. However, keep in mind that DUI checkpoints are a possibility on any road you take home. If you are stopped at a DUI checkpoint, you must provide your driver's license, proof of insurance, and the registration of the car to the police officer. If they believe you have been drinking, they will ask you to perform a roadside sobriety test. If you are determined to be drunk, you will be arrested and your vehicle will be impounded.

We recommend downloading The Umansky Law Firm App just in case things don't go as planned. With helpful categories such as "Call My Lawyer", "BAC Calculator", "I Need a Ride, Find a Cab", and "Help! I am in Jail", this app can be a real lifesaver. Keep in mind that alcohol can impair your senses, including your ability to judge how impaired you truly are before getting behind the wheel. Take the time to plan out a way to get home and/or take advantage of our app and get yourself a cab that way you don't risk spending your weekend in a cell.

Should you have any questions or concerns, please call us at our office number listed below. Thank you and have a nice day.
