Walmart Robber Sentenced to 26 Years for Robbery With Deadly Weapon

This past June in Orlando, local WalMart employees and customers became part of what seemed like a scene out of a cops and robbers movie after Catrell Ivory entered the store and held workers at gunpoint. According to Police Reports, this wasn’t Ivory’s first brush with the law. In 2017, he successfully held up two other local Orlando WalMarts and made away with more than $98,000.

In 2017, Ivory and his accomplices ushered WalMart employees into the cash room of the store and held them at gunpoint while they stole cash from the safe. Additional employees and store customers were also held at gunpoint at the front of the store so the gang could make off with the cash without being apprehended. Unlike the first two robberies, however, Ivory was not as successful the third time around and was arrested on the scene after he was unable to get into the cash room.

A Look at the Charges

Following his arrest, Catrell Ivory was found guilty of successfully committing two armed robberies and attempting a third. As a result, he was sentenced to 26 years and 7 months in federal prison.

In Florida, robbery with a deadly weapon is a first-degree felony. To be charged with this offense, all that’s required is the possession of a deadly weapon as the crime occurs. That means a person does not have to use the weapon to be found guilty. Penalties for armed robbery in the state of Florida range from 30 months in prison to 30 years and carry hefty fines up to $10,000.

In Ivory’s case, however, he was charged with possession and brandishing of firearms, which often carries much steeper penalties. Like robbery with a deadly weapon, robbery with a firearm is also a first-degree felony and, to be charged, the robber simply has to be found guilty of possessing a firearm at the time of the crime. Penalties for robbery with a firearm include:

  • 48 Months to Life in Prison
  • Life on Probation
  • Up to $10,000 in fines.

Considering Ivory was only sentenced to 26 years in prison for a crime that could carry up to a life sentence, one could assume that his defense made a strong case to reduce his sentence. Factors that could have aided in this sentence reduction for Ivory include the fact that he never discharged his weapon and that no one was physically harmed in the act.
