Brain Injuries

Car Accidents and Head Trauma

Unfortunately, these two things go hand in hand. When someone is involved in a car accident, it is inevitable that their head is knocked around due to the speed at which the car is moving prior to impact.

The truth is, a victims brain can be injured without his or her head even making contact with anything. When a victim’s head is thrown forward and back, there is movement of the brain within the skull. The rapid acceleration and subsequent deceleration of the brain can cause diffuse axonal injury. In layman’s terms, this means there is a shearing or tearing of the brain’s nerve cells.

Air Bags Can Damage Your Brain

We all know that air bags deploy with a great deal of force. While this speed and force is necessary to save the lives of auto accident victims, it can also deal a significant and forceful blow to the head in the process.

Even if a victim’s head and skull remains protected, the force of the air bag can cause tearing of the brain’s nerve cells, resulting in severe neurological damages. Unfortunately, these damages can escalate over time, and therefore it is best to make sure they are carefully monitored and evaluated. Many times there is a ripple effect that occurs, where the worst of the brain injuries do not surface until quite some time after the accident.

What Symptoms to Look For

The most severe brain injuries are usually obvious. Someone who has endured a horrible brain trauma may be unresponsive, unable to communicate, or even fall into a coma. However, there are many people who have suffered brain damage, but for whom the symptoms are more subtle. Or in other cases, victims appear to be fine after the accident and only later do warning signs begin to crop up. Read on for a list of symptoms that may indicate brain damage has been suffered as the result of a car accident.

  • Slow thinking process and faulty memory
  • Persistent headaches and/or neck pain
  • Changes in mood or personality, such as increased irritability, unprovoked anger or sadness
  • Nausea
  • Ringing in the ears
  • Diminished sensory capabilities (sight, hearing, taste, smell)
  • Ultra-sensitivity to light or sound
  • Inability to sleep properly – or, conversely, difficulty staying awake and alert
  • Difficulty balancing or controlling body movements
