Lake County Acts To Slow The Spread of COVID-19
Lake County is following other Central Florida counties in issuing an emergency declaration designed to slow the spread of COVID-19 and limit the risks of exposure to it. Lake County issued the order on Monday, March 30, establishing guidelines for social distancing.
“The orders were implemented to protect those who are most vulnerable, prevent the virus from spreading and prevent our healthcare systems from becoming overloaded,” said Lake County Commission Chairman Leslie Campione.
How is Lake County Trying to Protect the Elderly?
Under Lake County’s emergency declaration, residents are urged to stay at home if they are:
- Are 65 or older
- Reside with someone over 65
- Have serious underlying medical conditions
- Live with someone with serious medical conditions
Lake County is following guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control, which has indicated those underlying conditions could include:
- Chronic lung disease
- Moderate to severe asthma
- Serious heart conditions
- Compromised immune system
- Severe obesity
- And anyone undergoing cancer treatment.
Lake County is asking employers to allow those with underlying medical conditions to work at home, if possible, and to provide leave time to help ensure those employees are protected from possible contamination. Employers are also being urged to allow all Lake County employees to work remotely.
Can Businesses Stay Open in Lake County?
All businesses in Lake County are being allowed to stay open, although county leaders are asking them to practice social distancing measures by having employees and customers stay at least 6 feet apart at all times. Group meetings and training sessions are being limited to 10 people or less, and no more than 30% of normal occupancy is allowed at any one time.
Businesses are also being asked to monitor checkout points like cash registers to be certain workers and customers are following social distancing requirements.

Lake County did not have a specific date for lifting the emergency order, although on April 1, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis issued a statewide Stay At Home order for the entire state that will not be lifted until April 30. This supersedes Lake County’s Emergency Declaration.
